Free Press seeks interns throughout the academic year, over the summer and during other school breaks. Free Press may provide a small stipend to interns and supports students who qualify for work-study financial-aid programs. Free Press also offers verification for academic credit for internships.

To provide an open learning environment, we encourage interns to share their personal interests and experiences so we can take those into account when developing their work plans.

Qualifications: Applicants should understand the nature of Free Press’ work, which includes advocacy, organizing, lobbying, public education and outreach conducted online and off.

  • Interns must be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment and be responsive to shifting circumstances in Washington and elsewhere.

  • Excellent organizational, management and communications skills are a must.

  • Some knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes is helpful but not required.

  • A working knowledge of Net Neutrality, press freedom, media consolidation and other core Free Press issues is highly preferred. Excellent writing and public speaking skills, as well as facility with online spreadsheets and software, are vital.

Successful interns are self-starters who take their work seriously and tackle each assignment with initiative, imagination, energy and determination. We consider applications only from people who are currently enrolled in college or graduate school.

How to apply: Complete our legal/policy fellowship application here and our communications/digital internship application here. Applicants must also fulfill their academic institution’s requirements for securing credit for the internship. We accept applications on a rolling basis but recommend submitting applications by Sept. 1 for fall opportunities, by Dec. 1 for spring opportunities and by March 1 for summer opportunities.
